Dhanak vs Khaddar vs Karandi: Which Winter Fabric Should You Buy?
Every winter the same question comes up in our WhatsApp inbox: should I buy dhanak, khaddar or karandi? All three are popular Pakistani winter fabrics, but they feel and wear very differently. As a Faisalabad-based mill and stitching studio, we handle these fabrics every day, so here is a straight comparison to help you choose.
Quick answer
- Dhanak – soft, warm, slightly textured and holds embroidery beautifully. Best for embroidered formal and semi-formal winter suits.
- Khaddar – thick, cotton-based and very warm. Best for everyday printed suits in colder cities.
- Karandi – crisp, structured and elegant with a fine texture. Best for office wear and polished trousers or full suits.
What is dhanak?
Dhanak is a medium-weight winter fabric with a soft hand-feel and a light texture. Airjet dhanak is woven on modern airjet looms, which gives a more even surface. Because it is smooth and stable, it is ideal for heavy neck, front and daman embroidery. Most of our Winter Collection 2026 is embroidered dhanak paired with woollen or embroidered shawls.
What is khaddar?
Khaddar is a hand-loom-inspired cotton fabric with a coarser weave. It is the warmest of the three for daily use and takes digital prints very well. Choose khaddar if you live in Lahore, Islamabad or northern areas, or if you need easy-care suits for work and school runs. Men's Kamalia khaddar is also a classic for kameez shalwar.
What is karandi?
Karandi is a fine, slightly crisp blended fabric with a subtle texture. It drapes neatly and looks smart, so it is often used for printed trousers and formal winter shirts. Many of our dhanak suits come with a karandi printed trouser because it keeps its shape.
